Review of Born Pretty Nail Lacquer Metal Series B505 Heroine Polish

Today’s review covers Born Pretty Nail Lacquer in B505 Heroine from the company’s metallic collection. Everyone went nuts over chrome powder nails last year, so it’s not surprising that companies have been trying their best to come up with polish that has the same kind of effect minus the UV lamp requirement.

To be honest, chrome polishes have been around for years, although people might not remember them. This one doesn’t seem to perform much differently than the original ones although the packaging is different.

Each metal series polish is inside a sealed box with a window cutout so that you can see the color of the lacquer inside. The labels identify the product by both the item number on the website and the color of the polish.

Straightforward packaging.

The polish itself is contained in a cylindrical glass bottle. Inside is 9 mL of polish, which is less than what you would typically get from a bottle from the drugstore. It is nearly identical in size to polishes from nails inc. with the exception that nails inc. bottles hold 10 mL of polish in them.

The color of Heroine is best described as a pinky-purple metallic tone.

Open up the bottle, and you will find a fairly wide sized brush which is great for painting your nails in 1-2 strokes.

What is also apparent is that the formula has a strong acetone like odor, so you will want to paint your nails in a well ventilated area.

The first layer of polish on my nails left a lot to be desired. Although the polish has a nice consistency, it applies splotchy and unevenly. Do not lose hope yet, though!

One coat of Heroine leaves much to be desired. For this reason, I would not recommend this polish for stamping.

I was nearly at my wits end when I applied the second coat of polish to my nails. The formula looked extremely streaky and full of brush marks, but somehow dried in minutes to the lovely color below!

2 coats of Heroine dry to a brushed metal finish.

Any imperfections on your nail will definitely show up when using this polish. Although no brush strokes in the finish are evident, what shows up the most are the ridges in my nails. I don’t like to buff my nails because I don’t want to thin them out considering how much I abuse them, but you should do that first if you want the color to appear smooth. I already used a base coat prior to applying the color, so that does little in the way of filling in the ridges.

The Born Pretty webpage for this item (listed below) also advises that you use a UV base coat with this polish for more of a mirror effect. This provides a totally smooth surface for the polish in the hopes of making it more reflective, but it negates the whole reason why you would buy this item rather than a chrome powder in the first place.

As for the mirror effect while using a normal base coat as seen here, you won’t be able to totally see yourself in your nails, but they are reflective to a degree. I was having slight difficulties photographing these nails because I didn’t realize how much the color changed according to their angle to my light source.

While the polish itself is gorgeous, I decided to add some stamping over it to emphasize the brushed metal effect.

I did experience some chipping within a few days of wearing this manicure, but I remember that the original chrome nail makeup formulas did not last very long, either.

I don’t think that this polish can substitute for the chrome powders that require gel polish, but it does look quite stunning. The metallic look of the polish is muted and looks more like colored aluminum foil than shiny chrome, so as long as you know not to expect the same effect, you will love this color. For those of us who simply do not want to use gel polish, this is perfect. Just be patient with the application and be sure to use 2 coats of color along with a base coat and a top coat for the best results.
