Review of Born Pretty Peel Off Gel Base Coat

As a nail art blogger, I find that it’s hard to commit to wearing the same polish for an extended amount of time. The durability of gel polish is virtually lost on me as I usually end up taking it off within a day or two. And if you like to swatch gel polishes? You’ve got to be kidding me with that removal process!

This handy gel peel off base coat from Born Pretty Store will make you want to use your gels polishes again. Not only does it cure like a regular gel, but it makes removing your polish afterward super easy instead of spending lots of time soaking and scraping!

On the outside, the bottle looks like a normal soak off gel base coat, but it really does allow you to peel off your polish afterward!

The bottle holds 10 mL as stated on the outside. This is comparable to most gel polish brands, and you only need to apply one coat for it to work its magic.

The back of the bottle lists the ingredients. Oddly enough, the “instruction paper” from the directions is nowhere to be found.

I used one layer of base coat over clean nails and cured it for 30 seconds with a LED lamp, and this seemed to work. The formula holds up well and isn’t too runny like some other Born Pretty gels, and the brush was easy to manipulate.

This base coat is crystal clear and applies smoothly.

When I first tried this product, I still had acrylics on with a layer of gel top coat cured over the acrylic, and there were varying degrees of success with the peel off process.

A layer of the base coat was applied and cured on top of my acrylic nails.

The first thing that I noticed was that I should have been more careful capping the free edge of my nails because the layers of gel polish that were cured on top experienced shrinkage under the UV lamp, which then proceeded to cause some lifting of the base coat. This of course is not good at all because you don’t want your polish to start peeling off right after you’ve finished painting your nails!

Please excuse the thick tips as this was only the second time I had applied a full set of acrylics. You will notice that there is a small amount of lifting on the right sides of both my middle and pinky fingers.

It seemed to peel off fairly well at first. Only a small amount on the top right and side remained stuck to my nail.

A fairly satisfying peel.

My other nails did not fair so well despite the early lifting. The polish peeled off in pieces, and I had to use an orange stick to pick away at segments. However, I did notice that because I needed to do an infill on my acrylics, the parts of the polish that were over my natural nail peeled away perfectly. So as a topper over acrylics, this did the job, albeit messily.

Very unsatisfying peel power when applied over preexisting gel top coat.

A few weeks later, I completely removed my acrylics and decided to test this base coat out on just my natural nails. Before starting, I applied hand cream to moisturize my nails as peel off polishes can wreak havoc on dry natural nails.

I applied gel polish, nail art, and a gel top coat over this base and had a great experience with it. This time I made sure to cap the free edge of my nails, and no lifting occurred.

After two days, I decided it was time to change my nails up again, and I was able to peel off the polish in solid pieces quite easily. I find that it is easier to peel off if you first use an orange stick to lift up an edge starting from the cuticle area.

Finally vindicated!

While this product amazingly works over an already applied layer of gel top coat, it doesn’t compare to the satisfaction that you can get if you use this base coat over natural nails. As always, be sure to moisturize your nails before and after to keep your nails healthy as we all know that this nail art business can be damaging to the nail plate. But if you enjoy swatching gel polishes or just like the look of gels without the time commitment, this base coat is a must have!
