Shattered Mirror Nails

Not too long ago, I dropped my phone and cracked the screen for the first time ever! It’s limited to only 2 corners, so it doesn’t really get in the way, but for a perfectionist like me, it’s annoying! I’m due for a new phone upgrade anyway, so maybe it’s a sign… In any case, it inspired the creation of this shattered mirror nail art.

I began by painting all my nails with black gel polish. Because I knew I was going to apply chrome powder over my base, I didn’t mind using one of my lower quality gel polishes to do the job. This black gel polish in color 01 from Born Pretty’s Solid Color Series was the very first gel polish I owned and was part of their silver chrome starter kit. My, how far we’ve come since then! Now I know not to wipe off the tacky layer between coats of color and to use a good gel base coat with it! This shade still left much to be desired in terms of coverage as 2 thin coats still wasn’t very opaque, but like I said, I wasn’t picky about it because I knew I was topping it with a chrome powder.

Each coat cured for 60 seconds in a 36W UV/LED lamp.

I then applied and cured a coat of Clavuz No Wipe Top Coat prior to applying a silver chrome powder from IMethod Beauty over it with a sponge applicator. The results are super shiny and reflective, and you can’t tell that the black polish underneath it had uneven coverage.

Another layer of Clavuz No Wipe Top Coat was applied over the powder to seal it into place.

Review of Mefa 12 Color Gel Polish Set

Who can say no to a good box set? I’m a sucker for buying collections of items, so it’s no shocker that I end up with so many nail polishes. They’re just so small and colorful! Today we’re looking at a 12 bottle set of gel polishes from Mefa. They are super affordable and come in a cute box set that is perfect for gift giving.

The back of the package lists the ingredients and warnings. As with all gel polishes, you should test a little bit of the formula on your skin for a few minutes to make sure you don’t have an allergic reaction to it prior to curing it on your nails.

Tropical Spring Break Nails

Everyone was going away for spring break recently, which was the inspiration for this manicure. I have one student who adores flamingos and had a “flamingo experience” where she got to interact with them in person while she was in Florida, which sounded amazing! These nails are dedicated to her.

I chose a rosy salmon pink as the base color for this design. This was achieved with 3 thin layers of Belen gel polish in color NU016. Each coat was cured for 60 seconds in a 36W UV/LED lamp.

Fishnet and Lace Stocking Manicure

Wow, it’s been a minute since I’ve posted! I had a whirlwind of a month rehabbing baby squirrels, and not only did I spend most of my days feeding and caring for them, but the table where I normally do my nails was occupied by their giant cage! I’m going to try to catch up as much as I can with the blog now that they’re back at the wildlife center.

This manicure was meant to be a sexy springtime one featuring a fishnet stocking pattern. I started by painting my nails with a pale lilac toned gel polish from Belen in color NU024. I applied 3 thin coats of gel with each layer being cured for 60 seconds in a UV/LED lamp.

Review of Born Pretty Odorless Fast Dry Top Coat

Today’s review is on Born Pretty’s Odorless Fast Dry Top Coat. Typically when a company says that their polish is odorless, it tends to be water based. I’m still not sure how a water based top coat doesn’t wash off, but it’s one of those mysteries that I’m not going to question.

This top coat is strangely not clear and looks a little milky in the bottle. If you paint it on too thick, you will notice that the color of your polish will don a slightly foggy appearance. However, this polish is true to its word where it has no harsh odor. The formula is on the thinner side which I like because it dries faster that way.

Easter Bunny Manicure

I know I’m posting this tutorial a little late, but at least it will be a reference for future Easters to come! After seeing the Easter bunny around town a few times, I decided to make some Easter bunny nails that didn’t look as creepy as the ones that I saw! Seriously, some of those bunnies are terrifying!

To start, I painted 3 coats of LV010 from Ünt. This company is best known for their legendary peel off base coat, a product that I use in combination with a lot of my gel manicures to make them easy to remove seeing as I change my polish quite often, but they also have a full range of colors and cosmetics. This beautiful light pink polish dried with a vinyl finish, but it also took forever to set and was streaky for the first 2 coats. If you have a lot of free time to do nothing, this is a good polish, but it definitely does not dry in a New York minute. It was disappointing considering how well loved their Ready for Takeoff base coat is.

This beautiful swatch of LV010 from Unt needed a lot of time to dry, and it still wasn’t fully set when I started doing the rest of the nail art. Oops.

Review of Born Pretty Glitter Thermal Polish in BP-GT05 Cerulean Stars

Today we’re going to look at a thermal crelly polish from Born Pretty from the same Glitter Thermal collection that the color Cloud of Purple Sky came from. Today’s color, Cerulean Stars, is a beautiful light blue when cold and turns into a mostly clear jelly with glitter when warm.

This small 6 mL bottle doesn’t include a mixing ball, so it’s a little hard to make sure the formula is agitated thoroughly.
