Birthday Gift Nail Art

I keep meaning to do more birthday themed nail art at the insistence of friends, but somehow it always gets pushed aside in favor of other ideas. This week I participated in a birthday collaboration on Instagram with an obvious deadline that wanted us to use mint, white, holo, coral, baby pink, and nude colors along with a birthday theme, so I was able to create something to fit the bill.

I don’t own many green polishes, so it was hard for me to find a color that I could truly classify as mint. I opted to use Fearless from Formula X for Sephora for my base, which is more of a sage color instead. It is truly a beautiful hue, especially for the spring.

2 coats of Fearless by Formula X for Sephora is all you need to get full coverage color.

I went with gift box presents to fulfill the birthday theme for the prompt. Luckily I have a good plate to use to make things easy for me.

The Celebration BPX-L013 plate from Born Pretty Store helps cover major occasions.

I used reverse stamping to color in the boxes. To help speed up the process, I used multiple stampers so I could allow the polish to dry on one stamper as I colored in the next one. For the stamping, I used Ya Qin An polish in White and used the brushes from the bottles to color in the presents.

Reverse stamping with 4 stampers. Polish colors used were Dot from Zoya (pink), Give Peach A Chance from Sephora by OPI (peach), Sweet Daisy from Nicole by OPI (coral), and Ya Qin An stamping nail polish in White.

I applied Ya Qin An top coat over the stamper heads after I was done coloring in each image and allowed each decal to dry before gently lifting it up with a pair of tweezers and setting it onto my nail. After cleaning up the edges, another layer of top coat applied over the decal helped to seal the deal.

Presents fit for a birthday or any special day!

FYI- I had also tried stamping the image directly onto my nail, but because the polish dries onto the stamper, the details do not transfer as well as they do when you make a decal out of the design.

I love the look of all the pastel colors together, even though it wasn’t necessary to use them all at once for this collaboration. Check out the designs from all the participants below!

This was a fun prompt for the week. The wheels are already turning to figure out what I’m going to paint next. What a life as an artist!

Fuzzy Flocked Bear Birthday Nail Art

February 24 was my friend Beverley’s (@thehumblebear) birthday.  You guys might remember her from my Star Wars collaboration last year.  She’s an amazing freehand artist based in Singapore that I met on Instagram, and she’s one of the kindest and sweetest people to boot.  When I was asked to participate in a birthday bear themed collaboration for her, I couldn’t say no!  In fact, I was horribly sick with the flu when I painted this and didn’t think I’d be able to pull anything off, but I powered through to meet the deadline.

I wanted to do a flocked bear on one of my nails, and because I was going to use purple flocking powder from Bundle Monster, I opted to paint my nails a deeper shade of purple for the background.

OPI Ink. from OPI is a real stunner with its deep purple shimmer.

To apply the flocking powder, I applied a layer of Born Pretty Store gel top coat to my nail and then dipped my fingernail into the pot of flocking powder.

What a fuzzy nail! We’re not done here yet though.

I used an orange stick to push the flocking powder away from the cuticle to shape the top of the bear head and ears before curing the top coat for 30 seconds to set the flocking powder into place.  I had originally thought I could carve the outlines of the bear’s arms and legs into the flocking powder, allowing the background color to peek through, but I found that this was no easy feat.  I had to settle for painting over the flocking powder with craft smart acrylic paint.  I used purple paint at first but then ended up tracing over those outlines with black paint.

Fuzzy wuzzy was a bear… I swear he has arms, but you can’t see them because I have rather curvy nail beds.

I finished up by painting some simple balloons with acrylic paint on the neighboring ring finger and a nice little “Happy B-day Bev!” message for the occasion.

I never understood why flocked bears tended to carry balloons until I painted this manicure!

The requisite bottle shot for the collage.

Congratulations to all the other talented artists in the collage, and a big happy birthday shout out to Bev!

I’m still recovering from the flu, so I sadly didn’t get to finish all the @glamnailschallenge prompts for February, although I did a pretty good job of keeping up until I got sick!  March is going to be a busy month for me musically, so I’ll do my best to keep up with the blog.

Happy polishing!

Party Nails with Popple by Pretty & Polished

Sorry for my absence online again!  Anyone who has been following me on Instagram knows that I’ve been doing my nails, but I haven’t put up any tutorials for the last few yet.  It has been a busy 2 weeks for me, so I figured I’d start out by posting this pretty swatch of Popple from Pretty & Polished.

img_20161002_132859.jpg

Popple is a party in a bottle!

I literally spent 5 minutes on this manicure, which was done in a hurry before I left for work so that my nails wouldn’t be bare on my birthday!

I applied 3 coats to get the look here.  Because the glitters in the polish are suspended in a crelly (creme/jelly) base, the color is fairly sheer when you apply it.  It’s such a lovely color, and the brightly colored blue, pink, and yellow glitters really pop over the neutral base.  Makes me wonder how they came up with the name for this color…

For one step nail art, nothing else is better!  I really can’t get enough of this company’s polishes.  This particular one reminds me of confetti, and it’s the perfect polish for a fun celebration.

I bought a 15 mL bottle, which cost $8.50, but they also sell a mini size 6 mL bottle for $4.50 if you don’t like commitments.  The link for Popples on the Pretty & Polished website is shown below.  Happy polishing!
