Review of Mefa 12 Color Gel Polish Set

Who can say no to a good box set? I’m a sucker for buying collections of items, so it’s no shocker that I end up with so many nail polishes. They’re just so small and colorful! Today we’re looking at a 12 bottle set of gel polishes from Mefa. They are super affordable and come in a cute box set that is perfect for gift giving.

The back of the package lists the ingredients and warnings. As with all gel polishes, you should test a little bit of the formula on your skin for a few minutes to make sure you don’t have an allergic reaction to it prior to curing it on your nails.

Review of Clavuz Neon Bling 12 Color Gel Polish Set

Shopping for gel polish online can be scary business. Not every brand is trustworthy, and things get especially questionable when the price seems too good to be true. However, I had such good results with a gel base and top coat set from Clavuz that I didn’t hesitate to try out this 12 color gel polish box set from the same company.

IMG_20190220_231230.jpg

The “neon bling” 12 color gel polish set from Clavuz comes packaged in a box ready to be wrapped for gift giving.

The outside packaging really doesn’t entice the buyer into purchasing the set. They don’t specify which colors are included, nor do they have pictures of the polishes included, but they do list all the boring stuff.

IMG_20190220_231158.jpg

The instructions are printed on the back of the box along with low resolution images of random fingers painted with colors that you don’t get in this set.

IMG_20190220_231037.jpg

One side lists the ingredients and warnings while the other side displays generic graphic outlines of 12 bottles of polish, not scaled to size.

The contents of the box are more exciting. The bottles, which are an 8 mL size and therefore a little small, are held in place in a plastic tray, and more detailed instructions along with a swatching wheel are included.

Review of Azure Beauty 6 Color Gel Polish Set

Today I’m going to show you a gorgeous 6 color gel nail polish set from Azure Beauty. I can’t seem to find much information on the company, although I can tell you that they offer their products on Amazon.

This set is perfect for gift giving as it is presented in a nice box. The 7 mL bottles inside are a little small, but this allows you to try 6 different colors while keeping the price affordable. Each bottle ends up only costing a little over $3 (USD) each, which is still quite inexpensive considering that this is gel polish.

IMG_20190128_002153.jpg

Instructions and a set of swatch stickers are also included.

The nail polishes are identified by their catalog numbers rather than fancy names, so the swatch stickers really come in handy so you can see the colors at a glance. The shades included in the set are a bright white, a lavender gray, a baby pink, a tomato red, a plum toned jelly with holographic and fine silver glitters, and a light gray.

For the stickers, I used 2 coats of color and cured each layer for one minute.

Review of Clavuz Gel Top Coat and Base Coat Set

I’ve been working with a lot of gel polish lately because my Cindy hand (dominant hand, short for Cinderella- the one that does all the work and gets none of the recognition) gets abused at work, and I need polish that will stay put and protect my nails. This gel base coat and top coat from Clavuz was a cheap find at Amazon and really worked wonders. Keep reading for the full review!

Review of Beauty Big Bang Stamping Plates and Stamper Kit

Are you looking for the perfect gift for your favorite nail art loving buddy or even for yourself? You will love the selection that this kit from Beauty Big Bang has whether you are new to nail art or a seasoned pro!

IMG_20171104_132041.jpg

How beautiful is this nail mail?

There are 12 pieces total in this awesome set. You get a stamper, a scraper, and 10 random circular plates with assorted designs. The downside is that you don’t get to select what designs you will receive, but I loved the surprise of opening the package and seeing what arrived.

Each plate comes inside a resealable plastic bag. The front of the bag is clear so that you can see the images on the plate. Storing the plate inside the original packaging is recommended so that the surface does not get scratched from rubbing against other plates or objects.

IMG_20171104_131825.jpg

Basic instructions are printed on the back of the packaging.

The instructions aren’t very thorough as they don’t cover the first steps of stamping, such as removing the plastic layer from the plate, applying nail polish to the design, and scraping away the excess before transferring the image to the stamper. Seasoned pros won’t need the tutorial, but if you are purchasing this kit for a beginner, the recipient might be very confused as to what to do.

I think it’s very unfortunate that they do not mention the part about removing the plastic layer from the plates first because the plastic is clear and not easily noticed. Also, trying to find a free edge to pull the plastic away is a little tricky, although I find that using an orange stick helps with this.

IMG_20171104_131701.jpg

You can pick away at the edge of the plate to lift enough of the plastic layer to remove it easily.

As for the plates themselves, I think they are made by Blink, but they are clearly inspired by Konad. The etching is done very well, and the quality is top notch. As mentioned previously, you don’t get to pick which plates you will receive, but I loved the assortment of designs. Here are the 10 plates that were in my package: Continue reading

Birthday Gift Nail Art

I keep meaning to do more birthday themed nail art at the insistence of friends, but somehow it always gets pushed aside in favor of other ideas. This week I participated in a birthday collaboration on Instagram with an obvious deadline that wanted us to use mint, white, holo, coral, baby pink, and nude colors along with a birthday theme, so I was able to create something to fit the bill.

I don’t own many green polishes, so it was hard for me to find a color that I could truly classify as mint. I opted to use Fearless from Formula X for Sephora for my base, which is more of a sage color instead. It is truly a beautiful hue, especially for the spring.

IMG_20170522_030111

2 coats of Fearless by Formula X for Sephora is all you need to get full coverage color.

I went with gift box presents to fulfill the birthday theme for the prompt. Luckily I have a good plate to use to make things easy for me.

The Celebration BPX-L013 plate from Born Pretty Store helps cover major occasions.

I used reverse stamping to color in the boxes. To help speed up the process, I used multiple stampers so I could allow the polish to dry on one stamper as I colored in the next one. For the stamping, I used Ya Qin An polish in White and used the brushes from the bottles to color in the presents.

PhotoGrid_1495436749003

Reverse stamping with 4 stampers. Polish colors used were Dot from Zoya (pink), Give Peach A Chance from Sephora by OPI (peach), Sweet Daisy from Nicole by OPI (coral), and Ya Qin An stamping nail polish in White.

I applied Ya Qin An top coat over the stamper heads after I was done coloring in each image and allowed each decal to dry before gently lifting it up with a pair of tweezers and setting it onto my nail. After cleaning up the edges, another layer of top coat applied over the decal helped to seal the deal.

IMG_20170522_025801

Presents fit for a birthday or any special day!

FYI- I had also tried stamping the image directly onto my nail, but because the polish dries onto the stamper, the details do not transfer as well as they do when you make a decal out of the design.

I love the look of all the pastel colors together, even though it wasn’t necessary to use them all at once for this collaboration. Check out the designs from all the participants below!

Ring Palette Review

After getting into this nail art thing, I’ve found myself becoming more and more obsessed with finding cute rings.  After all, what better way to highlight a nice mani than by wearing jewelry that compliments it?

Imagine my excitement when I saw this cute ring palette on Born Pretty Store’s Instagram:

Jewelry that is also functional?  Yes, please!  Sign me up!

It comes shipped in a nondescript plastic bag, so it isn’t exactly gift ready if you were thinking of buying this for a nail art obsessed friend.  Shipping, although free, takes about 2 weeks for it to come from Singapore, so plan ahead.

img_20160118_131121.jpg

Not exactly the most attractive packaging. Buy a box and repackage this baby if you are planning to give it as a gift.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the ring comes with a little plastic cup for water.  It fits in the hole of the palette and is so cute.

img_20160118_131237.jpg

That notch in the palette isn’t just for decoration- it’s a water cup holder.

The unfortunate thing about the cup is that it does not snap into place.  Because it fits so loosely in the hole, it is prone to falling out and therefore makes it impractical to use as part of the ring while painting.  What makes the situation worse is the fact that the hole is in line with the finger band, meaning that your finger will naturally push the cup flush with your skin level as you slide the ring on and make it even more prone to falling out.  A smarter design would have taken this into account and positioned the cup notch at a different angle away from your finger.

img_20160131_145620.jpg

You can see that your finger will push the water cup out of the hole based on the positioning of the notch in the palette.

img_20160118_024958.jpg

If you want to use the water cup to do your own nails, this position is the most practical one to keep it from falling out. It’s still safer to leave the cup on the table.

It’s even more practical to have a client wear the ring as you paint her nails because her hand can stay flat on the table, preventing the cup and colors from spilling.

img_20160131_153235.jpg

The water cup fits best when the wearer’s hand can stay flat on a surface. Have the ring positioned with the cup pointing up towards the nail so that there is a little more space underneath the ring to accommodate it.

The truth is that the water cup issue wouldn’t have even bothered me if the ring didn’t come with it.  A real full size artist’s palette has a thumbhole notch in it, so I thought the hole was mimicking that feature solely for decorative purposes.  Besides, if you are using the palette with nail polish, you can’t clean your brush with water anyway.  Filling the cup with acetone would only be wasteful because the acetone would evaporate faster by being placed in an open container.  I say ditch the cup if you are using the product for yourself.

As for the band size, the width is pretty generous.  You can see from my previous pictures that it fits on my thumb without a problem, and the band is open ended, so it is slightly adjustable.  The diameter of the band is roughly the same as that of a penny.

img_20160131_150014.jpg

The penny almost perfectly covers the circumference of the band of the ring.

As a palette, it does its job just fine.  There are shallow indentations on the surface to hold 5 different colors, and there is space to blend your paints in the middle of the ring.  The benefit of having the ring versus using a traditional palette is that you can keep the paint/nail polish closer to your nails, and it is super portable if you like doing your nails on the run.  Plus how adorable is it to have a ring that functions as a palette?

img_20160123_181901.jpg

Even at a slight tilt, the paint does not drip out of its compartment because of the indentations in the palette.

Clean up is a breeze when you’re done with your manicure.  I wiped the ring down with a paper towel and some alcohol after using it with acrylic paint, and it looks as good as new.

While there are issues with the design for use with their supplied water cup, I still think that this is a fantastic buy.  I can’t get over how cute it looks, and it’s fairly easy to use while painting your nails.  It should be noted that this ring also is available in another design that looks like a paw print, although it does not look like that that option comes with a water cup, which is probably a good thing.  Either way, this ring is a great gift for someone who loves nail art or for yourself.
