Review of Beauty Big Bang BBBXL-033 Stamping Plate

I’ve been reviewing a lot of Beauty Big Bang stamping plates lately because I received a set of five Christmas plates from them. The BBBXL-033 plate is the last one out of the bundle for me to show you, so let’s take a look!

The plate comes with its own exclusive cardboard envelope where it lists the name of the item and has a unique bar code on the back. The illustration on the front is there to indicate that the designs included pertain to the holidays, but they are not actually depicted on the plate. As you may already know, it is a pet peeve of mine that companies don’t show the plate designs on the packaging because if you use the envelope to store the plate to protect it from getting scratched, you will have to remove it in order to see what images are on it. It’s not really a big deal, but it will slow you down if you’re looking for a pattern to inspire you.

Cute Holiday Penguin Manicure

I was inspired by the cute images on the Beauty Big Bang XL-033 stamping plate to create this fun holiday penguin manicure. It combines a wrapping paper print with candy cane stripes along with it just for fun!

I started with an almost white base. This color is called Steph from Julep, and it has the slightest hint of pink along with a gorgeous shimmery finish. I didn’t pick a pure white because I knew I was putting the penguin on one of my nails, and I wanted his belly to be a pure white that would stand out compared to the base color.

2 coats of Steph by Julep were applied for this swatch.

Reindeer Nail Art

During Black Friday, I went a little overboard buying all sorts of goodies for myself. Part of my haul included some gorgeous prototype polishes from Elusive Fox Lacquer, an indie brand based in Erie, PA. These polishes are all pretty much one of a kind blends that didn’t make it into the owner’s final collections, but they are still incredibly stunning! I feel bad even publishing swatches of any of the colors because you won’t be able to find them anywhere else!

Prototype #38 (at least called #38 for Fall 2018) is a sparkly deep green crelly polish that is full of assorted flakies and glitters. It looks like Christmas in a bottle, and it served as the basis for this reindeer themed manicure.

Review of Beauty Big Bang BBBXL-034 Stamping Plate

Today’s review cover the Beauty Big Bang XL-034 stamping plate. Keep reading to see how to create some beautiful manicures for the season with this item!

As is the case with all of the Beauty Big Bang plates, the BBBXL-034 plate comes packaged in a decorative cardboard envelope. You can tell what the theme of the patterns is based on the graphic printed on the front, and it lists the name of the plate while the reverse side has a proprietary bar code for the item along with a pictorial showing how to use it.

While the packaging is cute, I always wish that they would leave a window cut out so that you can see what the images are on the actual plate so that you don’t have to open it to see the item. It is a huge step up that they have different graphics on the front so that you know what season the images are best suited for. Continue reading

Review of Beauty Big Bang BBBXL-030 Stamping Plate

Thanksgiving has passed as has Black Friday, which can only mean one thing: it’s safe to decorate for Christmas! Some may not appreciate the jump start into the holiday season, but it has been proven that decorating for the holidays can put you into a happier mood. Even if you’re not planning to do full on lights and a tree, you can get your nails ready with this plate from Beauty Big Bang!

The Beauty Big Bang XL-030 plate comes in a beautifully printed cardboard envelope. It lists the plate name on the front and has its own personalized UPC code on the back along with a photo tutorial for how to use the product. Unfortunately the holder is not designed to allow you to see the actual images contained on the plate, but at least if you are looking for your Christmas themed plates, this will stand out in your collection.

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer Manicure

We recently had our first snowfall storm in NYC, and wow, did it make a mess out of the city! Nothing takes the magic out of snow away like sitting in traffic on unplowed streets for hours and hours! The weather inspired me to create a gray skied manicure with a lovable icon of Christmas to try to bring the wonder back.

I started by painting my nails gray with Laguna Moon Classic Soak Off Gel Polish in color CL064. Because I was using gel polish, I applied 3 very thin coats cured at one minute each in a UV/LED lamp.

3 coats of Laguna Moon’s CL064 shade turns your nails into a chic gray with the added reinforcement of a gel polish.

My initial plan was to mostly use stamping techniques for this manicure, although things did not go exactly according to plan for me as you will soon see!

Santa’s Sleigh Xing Sign Nails

We’re in the home stretch to Christmas, so I had to get at least one Christmas themed manicure in before the big day.  Inspired by road signs, I decided to paint a “Sleigh Crossing” version to warn people to look out for Santa and his reindeer.

To start, I painted my nails with 2 coats of white polish.

b.m.c. nail lacquer in white.

To make my road sign noticeable, I used neon yellow powder that glows under blacklight.

Born Pretty Neon Phosphor Powder in color #11.

To use this powder, you must apply a gel top coat over your nails and cure it for about 15 seconds so that the surface stays tacky, then apply the powder with a sponge applicator.  Being neat is a strong plus here.  You don’t want to get the top coat pooling in your cuticles or sides of your nail bed because things will look really messy, and using a latex barrier on your skin will aid with the clean up process.

After applying the powder over the gel top coat, my nails have a matte look.

You will want to use a fan brush to dust away any excess powder from your nails before applying another layer of gel top coat to seal in the color.  The powder can easily contaminate the brush and bottle of top coat, so if you are truly paranoid, you might consider pouring out a small amount of top coat into a separate container for use with this manicure to keep things neat.

Once the gel top coat is applied and fully cured, my nails achieve a highlighter yellow color.

The Santa and reindeer silhouettes were painted freehand with a detail brush and craft smart acrylic paint in black.  I really wished that I had a stamping plate that I could have used for this step, but it wasn’t the worst thing that I’ve tried to paint.

Warning: Sleigh Xing!

The reindeer were the hardest elements for me to paint.  I had to redo at least one nail completely because I didn’t like how it was turning out.  The best part about having gel top coat sealing the neon base is that you can wipe away the paint on top without messing up the color underneath.

If you decide to attempt the freehand here, I find that it is easier to start by painting the shape of the body, then add the tail, legs, head, and antlers.  That’s my method, but hey, what do I know about painting animals?  Truth be told, I was cursing the whole time about how I can’t paint reindeer!

So while the design looks the most impressive under a blacklight, sadly they do not glow in the dark.  Seeing as you don’t encounter blacklights in many places, people can’t truly appreciate the full effect of these nails.  They’re still pretty festive, so you might want to attend a rave just for fun with these on.

Hope you have a Merry Christmas if you celebrate!  Happy polishing!
