World Tour Nails

Happy September! I’m in the process of putting together my first passport application right now. It’s shameful that I still haven’t been outside of the US yet! I have some potential gigs coming up that will require a passport, so I figured that I better get that application in as soon as possible!

Today’s nail art features a world tour of sorts, containing all sorts of landmarks from different countries.

To start, I painted all my nails a pretty pearly light blue color to represent the sky.

Faded Blues by Ulta Professional is a lovely sky blue that is opaque in 2 coats.

To give my sky texture, I went with a smooshy technique using 3 colors: light blue (Faded Blues by Ulta Professional), medium blue (What I Like About Blue by China Glaze), and iridescent white (Of Quartz You Can by Finger Paints). I applied dots of each polish onto a stamper and smooshed the colors together with another stamper so that I could apply the mixture of colors to my nails with both stampers. This allowed for a little more control over the smooshed look versus simply dabbing the polish straight from one stamper onto my nails.

For Feb. 1, the challenge was to come up with a heart themed manicure.  I tried to think a little more outside the box and decided to do conversation hearts on my nails.  I never liked eating them, but they’re pretty!

To start, I picked polishes in pastel pink, yellow, green, purple, and white that would match the candy’s colors.

From the far left, the colors used are as follows: Ulta- Encore Pink, Sephora by OPI- Read My Palm, OPI- Rumple’s Wiggin’, essence the gel nail polish- wild white ways, and Sephora by OPI- IM Beauty.

I chose a random layout of the colors, but I purposefully did not want to put pink and purple next to each other because they look a little too similar.

A plate from Bundle Monster has a lot of the classic sayings from the candy, so I was able to save some time by stamping some of these onto my nails.

Plate BM-425 from Bundle Monster.

Some care had to be taken to make sure the words would fit the nail I was stamping.  My nails aren’t very big, so I made sure to use the narrowest design on my pinky.

Stamping was done with Konad Special Nail Polish in Red.

What I love about the stamping here is that it doesn’t have to look totally perfect.  The candy often has faded letters in some places, and the words are not always placed in the center of the heart.  If you decide to recreate this manicure, you will find that to be a very convenient excuse if things don’t work according to plan!

The last step was to paint a heart shape around the words.  Again, because my nails aren’t very wide, I couldn’t fit an entire heart onto the nail.  This allowed me to focus on just painting the top and bottom halves of the heart.  I used a detail brush with craft smart acrylic paint to do this, and I decided to outline each nail with a darker shade of its base color.  You can put a dot of color at the lowest and highest points of the curves of the heart and connect them in order to keep the outline more symmetrical as you initially paint the shape.

Some of my paint pots are getting old, so the formula is more lumpy on some nails compared to others. Oops.

Add some top coat, and you’re all set!

These hearts have a lot to say!

Part of me wants to do a cynical version of the hearts for an anti-Valentine’s Day theme, but that would require me to paint the letters by hand.  It’s definitely a fun take on this mani, so I’ll have to make this happen at some point!

Happy polishing!

Adrianna Papell Black and Blue Striped Dress Nails

I played in a small recital tonight, so naturally I wanted my manicure to match my dress.  I just bought a gorgeous black and blue striped gown from Adrianna Papell, and the graphic print looked so nice that I decided to put it on my nails.

The fabric print of the dress… and no, it’s not white and gold!

The colors are obviously blue and black, so I tried to use a similar blue that wasn’t too dark and could show the black stripe contrast against it.  Because I wanted to hand paint the lines, I knew I was going to use black acrylic paint for the most part, and I used a sparkly black polish for accent stripes.

The materials from left to right: craft smart acrylic paint in black, Sally Hansen Hard As Nails Xtreme Wear in Blue It, and Ulta Professional Nail Lacquer in Rhinestone Rocker.

After applying a base coat, I painted Blue It on all my nails.

Blue It by Sally Hansen. It’s also great for a September birthstone (sapphire) manicure.

I used a striping brush along with black acrylic paint to form stripes of varying thicknesses.  I made the thumbnail a chevron pattern and made a giant chevron out of the other four nails.  I tried to make everything as symmetrical as possible, so my index and middle finger nails are mirror images of my ring and pinky finger nails.

Stripes painted with acrylic paint. It looks like I made blueberry candy cane nail art.

Some of the stripes on the dress have a glittery hue on one side, so I painted Rhinestone Rocker on a few of the sections with a striping brush.

A hint of shimmer gets added to a few stripes with Rhinestone Rocker by Ulta Professional.

After adding a topcoat, everything looks shiny, and the contrast between the black stripes and the glittery ones is less noticeable although still pretty.

All done! Black and blue striped goodness.

It should be mentioned that I didn’t try to exactly copy the striped pattern of the dress.  I just painted the different thicknesses and spaced the lines out in a way that I thought might look nice.

Side by side comparison of the Adrianna Papell dress to my nails. I guess I put the shimmery stripe on the wrong side of the line, but I didn’t try to exactly copy the pattern.

The manicure was a small touch that I’m sure the audience didn’t notice, but it was a nice concert regardless.  Happy polishing!

Magical Dandelion Seed Nail Art

Ah, September.  The seasons are changing, so I wanted to do some nail art that would capture the magic in the air.  The lightness of fluffy dandelion seeds seemed perfect for the prompt!

I knew I was going to use a plate from Born Pretty Store, so I decided to stamp silver holographic polish onto a shimmery dark blue background.

wpid-img_20150905_235215.jpg

The look starts with Soho Skinny from Ulta Professional, a beautiful pearly dark blue.

BPL-026 plate from Born Pretty Store. I used the design in the top right hand corner for all my nails.

For that touch of magic, I brushed Sugar Coat by Kleancolor on just the top half of my nails to create a simple glitter gradient look.

Sugar Coat by Kleancolor. I love the iridescent glitter in this polish!

And that’s it!  Super easy, sophisticated looking nails that capture the magic of the changing seasons.  Hope you all had a wonderful Labor Day!  Happy polishing!

Holographic dandelion seeds. Winning.

Stamped Shell Nail Art

It’s back to school time for a lot of kids right now, so I don’t have much more time to get another summery mani in this year.  😦  Because I’ve been suffering from horrible back pain and spasms all summer after my car accident, I haven’t had the opportunity to hit the beach, even though I don’t live too far away from one.  My nails this time gave me an excuse to at least hobble around on the sand long enough to take a picture while I waited for my prescriptions to be filled at the neighborhood pharmacy.

But enough of my sob story- I know you’re here to read about nail art, so here are the details behind this look.

For the base color, I used Faded Blues by Ulta Professional, which is a beautiful pearly light blue.

Ulta Professional Nail Lacquer- Faded Blues

I wanted my nails to have a very dreamy and lighthearted look, so I did the stamping with Konad Special Nail Polish in White with Jumbo Plate 2 by Cheeky.

wpid-img_20150807_232846.jpg

Stamped shells- I used the pattern in the first column, 4 rows up from the bottom.

No special tricks or anything on this one- it’s just plain old stamping goodness!

wpid-img_20150821_183703.jpg

Sally sold seashells by the seashore- seashell nail art.

The look reminds me of beach houses and all the freshness and airiness of a fine summer day.  More importantly, these nails make me feel happy thinking about collecting shells on the beach!  🙂

Hope you all have been enjoying these past few months because soon enough it will be cold again.  :O  Happy polishing!
