Unicorn Mermaid Nails

I’ve been holding off on using gel polishes after a bad skin reaction to the curing lamp a few months ago. I was really scared that my nails might fall off because my nail bed started peeling back, and the skin around the nails was itchy and getting hard before peeling off! Truly a nightmare. I’m a little wary about overdoing it with the lamp now (what, you’re not supposed to do gel manicures more than once in a day?), so I purchased some fake nails and decided to go about my swatches in this manner instead. Who knows, maybe I’ll end up doing sets for people now that I have all these fake nails!

In any case, I was super excited to use some holographic powder to create a fun and whimsical unicorn mermaid manicure, so as per the usual steps, I applied gel base coat from iMethod Beauty, cured that for 60 seconds, then applied and cured 2 coats of black gel polish. The color was 007 Blackpool from Aimeili, and it’s a trustworthy but affordable gel polish that provides the perfect base for chrome and holo powders.

Disclaimer: this is an old swatch on my actual nails because I was too lazy to take a new photo of a polish that I already swatched.

I then applied a layer of no wipe top coat from iMethod Beauty and cured it for 60 seconds before burnishing in their holographic powder with a sponge applicator. After all the black polish was covered by holo, I swept away the excess powder with a brush and applied another layer of gel top coat.

With a dazzling effect like this, who can say they don’t like holo?

Irish Unicorn Nails

If you blog, you’re almost always expected to come up with nails for every holiday. While I never used to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day all that much, my nails certainly have been on board for the past few years! This year’s inspiration came from a student of mine who dressed up as an Irish unicorn for her lesson. I became obsessed with her headband, so she gave me a homework assignment to create some nail art based on it.

My first step was to paint all my nails green. I used Paper Chasing from China Glaze.

The perfect kelly green- Paper Chasing from China Glaze. Be warned, though- this stuff will stain your nails a shade that Elphaba would find normal!

For more impact and sparkle, I used Emerald City holographic glitter from Dimension Nails over the polish. To apply it, I painted a coat of Paper Chasing over a nail, dipped it into the pot of glitter while the polish was still wet, then used a fan brush to sweep away the excess. This process was repeated for each nail.

Welcome to the Emerald Isle!

Review of Born Pretty BP-151 Stamping Plate

I’ve always been a fan of stamping plates, so today’s review covers plate BP-151 from Born Pretty.

This plate is one of the circular ones reminiscent of the original series issued by Konad except this one has better packaging!

Front and back views of the packaging.

All stamping plates from Born Pretty come inside a cardboard sleeve to protect them from scratches while they are in storage. A sticker with the plate’s ID number seals the open edge to keep the plate from falling out during shipment. I still wish the outside of the package showed a picture or graphic of the plate it contained or perhaps had a clear window to see its contents. I tend to not store my plates in these holders because of this despite the level of protection that they provide.

Looking at the plate straight from the package, a thin layer of blue plastic film covers the surface, again to protect the plate from getting scratched during the production and shipment processes. This film must be removed before using the product.

Unicorn Nail Art

Happy March, everyone! I’ve been meaning to do some unicorn nail art for awhile just for fun, so let’s get on with this magical manicure!

My base color was an indigo wonder from Beauty Bigbang, 009 in their Holo Polish series.

Beauty Bigbang Holo Polish 009 is full of magical rainbows that are perfect for a unicorn theme!

I’ve been feeling lazy about doing freehand stuff lately, so I opted to use plate L045 from Harunouta to assist me with this manicure.

I chose to use the unicorn from the top row, 2nd image from the left, and the shooting star 2 images to the right of that for this manicure.

Unicorn Pastel Smooshy Nails

Today’s manicure is all about trying to make some pretty looking nails. I haven’t done any smooshy nail designs since my first try in November, so I decided to use a pastel unicorn-ish palette with colors from the Life’s A Beach Sephora by OPI collection along with some stamping.

I started by painting all my nails white so the light colors would show up better.

Sephora by OPI polish in White Hot.

To do the smooshy nails technique, I used a large stamper and dotted different colors of polish onto the surface. I immediately used the stamper to smoosh the polish onto my nails in a haphazard manner and repeated the process until I was satisfied with the look.

I used light blue, peach, and lavender polishes for the unicorn palette. The colors are called Havana Dreams, I Gotta Blush On You, and It’s Hippo To Be Square respectively, all from the Sephora by OPI Life’s A Beach collection.

You will find that using liquid latex around your nails will help make the clean up process easier, but using regular tape will also do the job if you don’t own liquid latex. I used Born Pretty Liquid Peel Off Tape here which removes fairly easily.

My finished smooshy nail design. Excuse the liquid latex on my fingers as I kept it on to make cleaning up the stamping part easier.

The finishing touch was to add an avant-garde pattern over the smooshy design. For this, I used plate BP-L070 from Born Pretty Store along with Born Pretty Stamping Nail Polish #2 (silver).

This design used the 4th pattern from the top left side of plate BP-L070 from Born Pretty. It reminds me of Frank Gehry designed buildings.

The result is a gorgeous color combo worthy of any summer festival or brunch.

Silver adds the final unicorn color themed touch to this manicure.

This look was super easy to put together, and it’s great if you like light colors.

Hope you have a great weekend ahead! Happy polishing!
