Egyptian King Tut Nails

Tonight is our first official performance of Verdi’s Aida, the story of which is set in Egypt. I decided to go with an Egyptian theme of gilded gold nails, hieroglyphics, and the head of King Tutankhamun’s (Tut’s) sarcophagus as an accent nail.

I started by painting all my nails a shiny metallic gold. I used Charge It! from Sephora by OPI.

2 coats of Charge It! from Sephora by OPI turn your nails into opulent gold works of art.

While looking for Halloween manicure ideas in the past few weeks, I came across plate BM-S250 from Bundle Monster, now called Maniology, that had an Egyptian theme. They clearly thought that it would be used for the mummy aspects of it, but you can create a pretty classy looking manicure from some of the other designs.

King Tut was the highlight of this manicure, so I opted to work on him first before proceeding with the rest of the design.

Spiderweb Manicure

When it’s late October, the countdown to Halloween starts! There are so many fun things you can put on your nails at this time of year to celebrate the day, but I’ve chosen to highlight spiders and their webs first.

To start, I used a sparkly black holographic polish from F.U.N. Lacquer called Last Doubt. This allows for some slight contrast against the black spiders that will be put on top shortly.

2 coats of Last Doubt provide the perfect sparkly base for this spooky manicure.

Magnetic Galaxy Manicure

Today I’m going to show you a cute little galaxy manicure that was inspired by a nail polish that I recently obtained. Because it’s a magnetic polish, I first painted my nails with Johnny from Julep to provide a dark base.

2 coats of black polish (Johnny from Julep) were applied over a base coat prior to doing anything.

The stunning polish I’m about to show you is Aurora Borealis from the Born Pretty 3D Magnetic Aurora Series, and it’s absolutely beautiful! It has a chameleon effect that shifts from turquoise to a reddish purple in addition to having magnetic qualities. I applied one coat of this over the black polish and then immediately held a cat eye magnet over each nail at a diagonal angle for a few seconds while the polish was still wet so the pattern could form. I swear that my nails actually do look like a real aurora borealis!

Aurora Borealis is a very appropriate name for this polish from Born Pretty.

Grape Manicure

Hello! Sorry to have been MIA again, but I was depressed about my peeling, brittle, breaking nails. In my haste to remove some of my last few manicures, I’ve been using 100% acetone, which really wreaks havoc on natural nails, so I needed a bit of a break. I ended up repairing a broken nail with some acrylic powder, which accounts for some of the lumpiness in the manicure you’re about to see because I didn’t apply it to the whole nail and apparently didn’t file it down very well, either. Oops. But hence the inspiration for my [sour] grape manicure.

In my head I saw grapes on top of a terracotta tile like the decor you might find at Home Goods, so I opted for a buff neutral color (Alison from Julep) to go with the nails that would have grapes on them. The other nails got painted with one of the accent colors that I planned to use for my grapes: Purple with a Purpose from OPI.

I love the shimmer in the purple polish from OPI, and the buff/peach colored nails have what Julep calls a “soft focus finish.”

Patriotic Independence Day Nails

Happy July 4! It’s America’s birthday, so my nails are painted with red, white, and blue colors to commemorate our nation’s flag.

The easiest way to do this manicure is to start with a white base. I chose Ya Qin An Stamping Nail Polish in White because it dries quickly and is completely opaque in 2 coats.

IMG_20180704_012525.jpg

I used Bundle Monster’s BM-H25 plate to do the stamping. I featured the images on the top and right sides of the plate in this manicure.

The stamping technique that I used requires the application of two different polish colors to the same design and a single scraping away of the polish so that a gradient effect is not created. It easily becomes a complete mess of colors if you’re not careful with this!

Abstract Watercolor Flowers Manicure

Hello everyone! I’ve been super busy trying to gather all my paperwork together to do my taxes, so I apologize for not being that active as of late. I suspect that I’m going to have to take a break at least until after April 15!

In the meantime, I tried to slap together something that would be quick to paint and look cute for spring. I drew inspiration from a bouquet of carnations that a student gave me after a concert and a plate from Born Pretty Store. Let’s get started!

I first painted all my nails white. I looked for an unused polish in my collection and came up with this neon base coat from Formula X. Because it was meant to be used underneath other colors to make them appear brighter, it doesn’t really perform the best as a stand alone color, but it does the job.

This neon base coat from Formula X has a slightly yellow tint to it. 3 coats of polish are pictured here.

To make the outline for the flowers, I used a plate from Born Pretty Store. The image in the top left corner is a beautiful abstract floral design that I loved for its hand painted look.

Because the pattern was so large, I was able to stamp various portions of it across all of my nails which added to the hand painted look. Continue reading

Frosted Leaves Winter/Spring Manicure

Hi, everyone! Who else is sick of the weird weather patterns lately? NYC just got dumped with a load of snow on the 2nd day of spring, so I came up with a little snow day manicure with my day off.

I picked a pretty pastel blue-gray color from Julep called Zoey. It’s great for spring, but it shares the cool tones of winter.

2 coats of Zoey by Julep, shown without top coat.

Spring usually conjures up images of flowers and buds so I chose a pretty leaf design from plate BM-702 from Bundle Monster for this manicure.

I used the image from the upper right hand corner for this manicure.
